Dispatch automation for large trucking fleets has to support several terminals running different processes, not one standardized workflow for everyone.
Dispatch automation that works cleanly for a twenty-truck fleet often falls apart somewhere past a few hundred trucks, and it's rarely the automation logic itself that breaks. It's the assumption underneath it, that dispatch is one process, running one way, for one fleet.
Large trucking companies, especially ones running multiple terminals or business units, don't operate as a single fleet. They operate as several fleets sharing a name. Dispatch automation built around a single, fixed workflow forces that variation into one shape, which either means some terminals get a process that doesn't fit their operation, or the company ends up running multiple disconnected systems just to accommodate the difference.
This is the specific problem multi-tenant architecture solves, and it's why we built BeyondTrucks around it rather than a single-fleet model with configuration options layered on top. Each terminal or business unit can run its own dispatch workflow, its own scheduling logic, while the parent organization still gets a consistent view across all of it for reporting, rate management, and billing.
The other piece that matters at scale is how the automation reacts to disruption, not just how it handles a normal day. Predictive ETA and delay detection that catch a problem early enough for a dispatcher to actually respond matter more as fleet size grows, because a delay at one terminal can quietly cascade into capacity problems somewhere else in the network if nothing surfaces it in time.
My honest take for large fleet operators evaluating dispatch automation: ask less about the automation features and more about whether the platform assumes one dispatch process or genuinely supports several running side by side.
